This season is shaping up to be another great one for the Colorado Avalanche, but their future beyond this year is up in the air, with star forward Mikko Rantanen potentially on the way out in free agency.
The 28-year old is hitting free agency at the optimal time in his career, as he is coming off two straight 100-point seasons, and after showing the ability to play centre this season, he's arguably the top name on the market.
While the Avalanche still want to lock him down to a long-term deal, his contract demands may be too much to overlook, with several teams likely to line up in free agency to land him.
Now, Bleacher Report have named the Ducks, Blackhawks, Islanders, Sharks, Sabres and Bruins as potential landing spots for the superstar forward, with all of them having the salary cap to cater to his contract demands.
In 2024/25, Rantanen has 25 goals and 64 points in 49 games played, and after missing just two games over the past two seasons, tallying 97 goals over that time, he's proven that he's not only reliable, but capable of consistently producing at a high level, with the benefit of playing alongside Nathan MacKinnon no doubt helping that play.
If the Avalanche can go on another deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, there's a good chance they bite the bullet and give in to Rantanen's demands, but if he does hit free agency, don't be shocked if many more teams become involved in the chase for the Finnish superstar.
