The Edmonton Oilers just dropped a hammer on their crease by putting goalie Calvin Pickard on waivers Sunday afternoon.
It is a cold move for a guy who has been a fan favourite.
The 33-year-old veteran was drafted in the 2nd round, 49th overall by the Colorado Avalanche back in 2010.
He has bounced around the league plenty since then.
But his time in Edmonton might be hitting a dead end. He is carrying a $1M cap hit this season.
The Oilers need more saves right now
Stuart Skinner is the clear lead dog in that room.
Yet the Oilers aren't getting enough from the backup slot to feel safe.
Pickard has 11 wins on the season so far.
His .900 save percentage is decent, but not elite.
Stan Bowman is looking for a spark or maybe just clearing space for a trade. We know the Tristan Jarry move hasn't exactly worked out as hoped.
No more patience. No more excuses. No more free passes.
The Pacific Division is a meat grinder this year.
One bad week can ruin a season.
Will another team pull the trigger and grab him for free?
