Per Wild analyst Michael Russo, it's because backup Jesper Wallstedt is experiencing an illness right now.
Jesper Wallstedt is sick, so Filip Gustavsson and Marc-Andre Fleury were in net at today's mnwild skate. I assume that means Cal Petersen will back up Gus tonight. - Michael Russo
Petersen hasn't posted the best stats with the Iowa Wild this year, going 4-13 with a .897 SV%.
He was once viewed as a potential heir-apparent to Jonathan Quick with the Los Angeles Kings, signing a $15 million extension in 2021. But his poor stats since then have resulted in him being moved around the NHL to various teams.
He's gone 46-44-10 with a .903 SV% in his NHL career.
Wild Goaltender Jesper Wallstedt Has Been Involved In Trade Rumours
Wallstedt, who has shown tremendous promise in his first full year in the NHL, has been the subject of trade rumours despite his success.
He's been linked to multiple teams, including the Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers.
He was taken by the Wild with the 20th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.
