The New York Rangers placed star defenseman Adam Fox on injured reserve today after he left last night's game early.

The New York Rangers got some bad news this afternoon as it was revealed that star defenseman Adam Fox will miss significant time with an injury.

The 27-year-old left last night's game against the New York Islanders early in the 3rd period after taking an awkward fall on the ice.

He quickly got up under his own power, but went straight down the tunnel upon reaching the bench, appearing to clutch his left shoulder.

Today, the team announced that he is going on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, most likely sustained on the play.

With the move, Fox will miss at least ten days of action, meaning he will be out until at least March 7th, which just so happens to be the NHL trade deadline.

The Rangers have four games over those ten days.

Based on the way this is being reported, it does sound like Fox will be out longer than that though, but the team is 'confident' they will get him back before the end of the regular season.

At this point, that might not even matter though. The Rangers are currently outside the playoff picture, with 62 points through 58 games.

They are in 5th place in the Metro Division and sit two points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets for the 2nd wild card spot in the conference.

Fox has 5 goals and 48 points in 58 games with the Rangers this season, leading all Rangers defenseman in scoring by a wide margin, only behind Artemi Panarin in scoring overall.

He is a big part of the team's offense, especially the powerplay, where he has 16 points this year.

Considering the team's spot in the standings, his absence could be the final nail in the coffin for their playoff hopes.
