The Boston Bruins will have several young faces on their roster this season, and now they've been given a strong message by captain Brad Marchand.
After another strong campaign a year ago, the Boston Bruins have made some additions to their roster in Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov, but they now also have some holes to fill, namely at the right wing spot after the departure of Jake DeBrusk. In his first interview since returning as captain of the Boston Bruins, Brad Marchand has opened up on who could potentially fill that role, giving major praise to young Morgan Geekie, who could be looking for a bigger role in 2024/25.
«I love playing with Geeks,» Marchand said. «He's so great in some of the different areas, the way he can hold onto pucks and makes plays. Shoots it. Great in the corners. I think he really complements our line as well. We haven't had a ton of reps together, so we'll continue to work on it. But I've always really liked his game.»
However, despite having spots open, Marchand has made it clear that spots on the team simply won't be given out, and sent a strong message to the likes of Matthew Poitras and Fabian Lysell among others.
«It's encouraging,» Marchand said when informed youngsters like Lysell, Matt Poitras and Georgii Merkulov played pretty well against the Capitals. «But pretty well needs to be better. For those guys to make the team, you've got to look at it and push guys out that are on term and big deals. Pretty good is not going to cut it. If you're happy with that, you've got a long ways to go.»
It may sound harsh, but there's a reason why he's considered one of the best captains in the NHL, and with the Bruins looking for another Stanley Cup run in 2024/25, they will need those players to step up into big roles and succeed right away.
