The calendar now being flipped to September, the Boston Bruins have superstar goalie Jeremy Swayman still uninked, and with training camp on the horizon, business needs to pick up, as soon as possible. The Bruins need to reach a deal with the Anchorage, Alaska native quickly or he won't be able to start the season.
Frank Seravalli has reported that the two sides are millions apart. It doesn't appear to be as bad as initially thought, as the first reports claimed Jeremy Swayman wanted $10 million, but now it appears that he wants $8 million and the Bruins prefer more of a bridge deal at $6 million per season.
Now that September means we are in the late stages of the offseason, Kevin Paul Dupont of The Boston Globe also believes the Bruins are taking a different approach to getting Jeremy Swayman under contract.
Dupont had an interesting column recently in which he pondered the possibility of the Bruins going the bridge-deal route with Swayman rather than long-term, which is likely why they do not want to budge much higher than $6 million, as they'd rather see Jeremy Swayman prove himself for another season or two. Swayman did have a great season with the Bruins last year, as he played in 44 games, having split the season with former Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark. Swayman won 25 games and finished with a GAA of 2.53 and a save % of .916.
The assumption this summer has been that Jeremy Swayman and the Bruins get something done long-term. That could still happen, but the use of a bridge deal is an interesting wrinkle that has been tossed on the table, anyway.
It will be interesting to see how the contract situation for Jeremy Swayman plays out, but it's getting absolutely urgent now, as the season is about to start very shortly.
