The Edmonton Oilers find themselves in a tricky situation as the offseason winds down. The situation was caused after the St. Louis Blues decided to offer sheet both Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway who are restricted free agents.
Now the Edmonton Oilers have to figure out if they are able to match either contract and bring back either Philip Broberg or Dylan Holloway. Another layer has been added today as there has reportedly been friction between the Oilers and Philip Broberg for months that almost led to a trade and now influenced this offer sheet.
This afternoon a post on X created a discussion on a rumored trade from this past season. According to Elliotte Friedman the Edmonton Oilers were offered Pavel Buchnevich from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg originally.
The refusal of this trade from the Blues along with Philip Broberg's continued desire to be traded is not being looked at as the cause for the offer sheet. Bob Stauffer also mentions that if Philip Broberg wants to be traded it could make the Oilers decision to let him leave easier.
If the Oilers were to trade Philip Broberg they likely wouldn't get anywhere near the return that the offer sheet would provide. Therefore if a trade is inevitable the team might as well take the offer sheet.
In the coming days, we will likely learn more about the Edmonton Oilers plans. When all is said and done don't be surprised if Philip Broberg plays for the St. Louis Blues in 2024-25.
