The Mitch Marner-Craig Berube relationship may not be working out as everyone has hoped, and now a report surfaced linking the star forward in a trade.

There is a big focus this season with the Maple Leafs on embracing an increasingly defensive, gritty style, most notably the approach taken with Craig Berube.

The team is learning to switch their game to low-scoring, playoff-style games with an emphasis on discipline and defensive responsibility.

Although the current record is about as it was at this point last season, this being a new approach, less about immediate results and more toward adapting to a style fit for success in the postseason.

This is all about the experience in the types of games they will face come playoff time.

Most analysts and fans alike believe, based on talent alone, the Leafs have the skill to secure a playoff spot; the real test, however, comes from adjusting to playing these tighter games that could make or break them in the postseason.

Auston Matthews has demonstrated full investment in this style. His defensive play has brought him up to the level of a Selke Trophy candidate, with his blocked shots among the top three in league rankings for forwards.

The way this continues to amaze fans and critics alike is with his transformation into a two-way player.

There does, however, remain one potential conflict: Mitch Marner. An extremely creative, risk-taking offensive player, he is also a pending unrestricted free agent and likely in line for a big contract based on his offense.

There is a sentiment around the NHL that one of Marner or William Nylander won't be back next season.

The Leafs' mediocre power play has only heightened the drama, as this is a specialty area for Marner.

The question is, can Marner and Berube's system really mesh? Can Marner find what he needs within this defensive scheme or should the Leafs consider a move for what could be a transformative return?

There is certainly interest from teams, and the potential outcome could reshape the Leafs' future.
