Ovechkin is only 41 goals away from tying the all-time goals record held by Gretzky. He still has two years remaining on his current contract, which means he would only need to score 21 goals in each of the next two seasons to beat the record. Ovechkin strongly believes that he would already be the record holder if it wasn't for all the bumps along the way.
After looking through some stats to see if Ovi knows what he's talking about, it looks as though he missed a total of 155 games due to the two NHL lockouts over the last two decades, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic league shutdown. Looking at Ovechkin's historical goal per game pace, he would have easily gotten way more than 42 goals over those 155 games, which would put him in the lead for goals scored.
While Ovi waits to capture Gretzky's record, he can take consolation knowing he has just earned himself the all-time record for most 30 goal seasons. Take that Wayne!
