Alex Ovechkin has been on the sidelines for several weeks now, and after a knee injury, it appears he's closer than ever to returning for the Capitals.

After a blistering hot start to the 2024/25 season, Alex Ovechkin went down with a knee injury against the Utah Hockey Club, with many believing it would end his chances of chasing down Wayne Gretzky's record this year.

Now, he's cleared the final and biggest hurdle before a potential return to the ice, as he shed his non-contact jersey for the first time in weeks as his return to the red-hot Capitals nears.

According to reporter Sammi Silber of The Hockey News, Ovechkin won't make his return on Friday night, but with the team playing two more games before Christmas, the hope is that he'll be back on the ice for Washington.

In 18 games played this season, the Capitals captain has an incredible 15 goals and 25 points, and with 51 games left in the season and just 26 goals separating him from the all-time NHL record, this could be an enjoyable run to watch for Ovechkin.

However, Head Coach Spencer Carberry has now officially ruled him out until after the break, giving Ovechkin 48 potential games to pass Wayne Gretzky's record in 2024/25, and if he recaptures the form that he had at the beginning of the season, that's a real possibility.

Whether or not Ovechkin is at 100% once he returns, only time will tell, but given the way he played to start the season and the talent that's on this fantastic Capitals team, the hope is that he can simply pick up where he left off.

Ultimately, this latest move from the Washington captain is a very positive one, as it shows that his rehabilitation is coming along well, and when he gets back on the ice, the team will become a must-see once again as the chase for history continues.
