Fans of the Washington Capitals got some good news today as it appears Alex Ovechkin is on track to return from his injury on time, if not early.

The great eight was seen skating by himself ahead of a team practice this morning.

The Capitals announced last month that their franchise icon would be out four to six weeks after a collision with Utah HC forward Jack McBain.

That announcement was just over a week ago, with the injury occurring on November 18th.

The fact that he is already back on the ice in any capacity is a good sign.

Naturally, Caps fans are excited by this news. Several fans referenced the old saying «Russian Machine Never Breaks,» an old quote from Ovechkin that has since become a cornerstone of the Capitals fandom.

Assuming Ovechkin returns within the original estimated timeline, his first game back would likely come sometime in mid-December to early January.

That being said, this is the longest injury of Ovechkin's career, so perhaps he can return faster than anyone expected.

Without a history of injuries, it is simply hard to say how quickly the 39-year-old can recover.

After all, it is a simple fact that some athletes have a natural ability to avoid injuries altogether or recover from them more quickly when they do occur.

Perhaps for Ovechkin, it is both. It would make sense as he has never missed more than a few games due to injury in his career, and most of those were actually due to illness during the Covid shortened seasons.

If the great eight does return in mid-December, that would give him a good chance to beat Gretzky's all-time goal record this season.

Currently, he is just 26 goals away from tying the record and 27 from taking it outright.

The Capitals have 53 games left on their schedule from December 16th onward. Be sure to stay tuned towards the end of the season as he has a very good chance of making history in 2025.
