On Monday night, the Washington Capitals had to watch their captain Alex Ovechkin leave the game against the Utah Hockey Club after a scary knee-on-knee collision. Such incidents can cause severe injuries and as we saw in the past, can lead to lengthy recoveries.
With Ovi nearing Wayne Gretzky's goal record, hockey fans all around the world are keeping their fingers crossed, hoping to see the Caps captain back on the ice as soon as possible.
Concerns emerged immediately after the incident and didn't stop despite the organization confirming yesterday that the captain would be reevaluated on a week-to-week basis.
This prompted the Caps' head coach Spencer Carbery to set the record straight on the recovery period.
In a radio interview, Carbery reiterated that Ovi's season isn't over and that another update will be made soon.
Per Capitals insider Tarik El-Bashir:
At 39 years old, he's been defying expectations, producing at a great rhythm. With 25 points, including 15 goals, Ovi has been carrying his team to the top of the Metropolitan Division.
The Caps will hope to keep this momentum going, but the challenge won't be easy. In the coming days, the team is set to go against the Colorado Avalanche, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, and Tampa Bay Lightning, four very talented teams with high expectations.
Fans are eager to see how the rest of the team steps up while Ovi recovers and see the captain come back at 100%, hopefully maintaining the rhythm he had going into the 2024-25 season.
