When free agency started on Wednesday, many teams were fighting over the top available free agents, but instead of doing that, the Carolina Hurricanes were bring in some veteran players via trade instead. The Hurricanes acquired veteran defenceman Brent Burns from the San Jose Sharks, and while he isn't the Norris winning defenceman he was a few years ago, he still racked up 10 goals and 54 points last season on a bad San Jose team.
The Hurricanes are hoping that this trade will bring them one step closer to chasing that Stanley Cup and Burns it hoping it will as well. According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, Burns didn't want to go to Carolina initially though:

According to Friedman, he wanted to go to Dallas but settled with Carolina. The Predators and Panthers were also in on Burns but his final decision was the Hurricanes.
