Patrick Roy, a legend in the National Hockey League and a hall of fame inductee, holds a record that arguably makes him the greatest goaltender in the history of the NHL. He needs no further validation.
Despite this, Roy is conscious of his past actions and how they might hinder future opportunities. Having recently won a Memorial Cup Championship with the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL, he candidly acknowledges his past missteps. His previous departure from his role as an NHL Executive, he admits, might prevent him from landing a similar position again.
Mistakes of the Past
Roy is introspective about his previous stint with the Colorado Avalanche. Not only does he own his mistake, but he also admits the terrible impression he left when he exited the team.
"The manner in which I departed from Colorado has made it challenging for me to secure employment."
"I'm aware of the poor decisions I made and the implications they have on how people perceive me today. I have no choice but to accept that. I've learned from my missteps. While the past remains unchangeable, one sometimes has to face its consequences. I comprehend the situation at hand." - NHL.com Looking Back
Following his departure from Colorado, Roy has worn the hats of head coach and GM for the Remparts. However, his abrupt resignation as coach and vice president of hockey operations with the Colorado Avalanche in 2018 is still notable. Roy mentions a clear discrepancy between his vision and that of Joe Sakic, then the Executive Vice-President and General Manager for Colorado, and now President of Hockey Operations. This experience, he notes, has taught him valuable lessons.
"From my tenure with Colorado and Sakic, I now understand, more clearly than ever, the necessity to separate management and coaching. You should be solely a coach if that's your title and solely a GM if that's your role." - NHL.com
