Brad Marchand may have been traded to Florida at the deadline, but now a top insider believes he could be headed to an original six team in free agency this summer.
At the trade deadline, the Boston Bruins finally did the unthinkable,
trading long-time captain Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers, officially turning the page into a potential rebuild.
However, the former captain is in the final year of his deal, meaning that unless he re-signs in Florida, he's likely to head to free agency in the summer, potentially readying himself to sign the final deal of his NHL career.
That's still a few months away, but after the move, Insider John Buccigross made a massive prediction, revealing that he believes Marchand will either sign with the Chicago Blackhawks or the Montreal Canadiens in the summer.
With the Montreal Canadiens fighting hard for their place in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it's clear that they've got something with this young core, and the addition of a veteran like Marchand could be exactly what they need to take them over the edge as they look to get back into the post-season.
This season Marchand has tallied 21 goals and 47 points in 61 games played, so while he isn't the prolific scorer that he once was, if he's given the right linemates and a good role, he can still clearly contribute at a very high level.
With his asking price likely to be between $3.5 and $4.5 million a year, it's clear that Marchand is a very affordable player at this stage in his career, and if a team like Montreal can somehow land the 36-year old, it would be a fantastic move for General Manager Kent Hughes.
