The 25-year-old is coming off a year where he appeared to establish himself as the team's long-term starter. He started more than half of the team's games in the regular season, and got all but one start on the team's two-round playoff run, which of course, included a game seven victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in round one. The team has rewarded him by trading Linus Ullmark, indicating that they have full confidence in his ability to handle the starter's work load.
Swayman appears to be repaying this confidence with confidence in the team. In a recent interview, he noted that everything was business as usual for him, and he is not worried about the lack of contract at this point.
That being said, something must be holding things up. At this point, we can only assume it is money that is the problem. The team currently has 8.6 million dollars in cap room with Swayman as the only key player left to sign. Apparently, he is asking for more than that otherwise a deal would already be done right?
The longer this goes on, the more questions will start to be asked. Will another team consider signing him to an offer sheet? After all the Blues just did that with two Oilers players.
Swayman has made 125 career starts at the NHL level, all with the Boston Bruins. He had a 79-33-15 record as well as a 2.34 goals-against-average and a .919 save percentage. Last season his numbers took a slight dip, but he also set a career high in games played with 44, 43 of which were starts. He already has some hardware, with a Jennings trophy that he shared with Linus Ullmark in the 2022-23 season and he got some Vezina votes last year, finishing 7th in voting.
