This afternoon the Carolina Hurricanes and Martin Necas have agreed to an extension which has set the stage for a new trade saga to begin.

Throughout the summer there has been a ton of speculation regarding trade rumors involving Martin Necas. Reports early in the offseason revealed Martin Necas had requested a trade. However, today the Hurricanes announced a two-year extension for Martin Necas which was first reported by Elliotte Friedman.

2 x $6.5M for Necas

The Hurricanes have signed Martin Necas to a 2-year, $6.5 million AAV contract extension

With the extension signed, there has now been debate over whether or not a trade should still be expected. A two-year extension is still short enough that Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky could trade him. However, a long-term extension is just as likely now with the time created with the new contract.

Solid, but seems more like a bridge deal. Wonder if he still wants a move or if he changed his mind.

With just a couple of months until the new NHL season begins it will be interesting to see if reports confirm which way things are heading. Regardless the Carolina Hurricanes now have a major piece of their top-six back on the roster for another Stanley Cup run.
