The past few days in the NHL have been full of discussion about Connor McDavid and the situation involving Vancouver's Conor Garland, for which the Oilers captain was suspended three games.
While most fans and analysts around the league understand why he was given this punishment for a blatant and illegal cross-check to the face, his teammates simply keep complaining, with Corey Perry the latest to weigh in on the situation.
In his statement, Perry questions why the NHL aren't doing more to protect their superstars, and while that would have made sense if Matt Rempe illegally took down McDavid, it was a 5-foot-8 Garland he was battling with.
This raises the question to Perry, why should McDavid be protected from battling it out with other forwards? And why does he deserve special treatment?
In response to Perry's ridiculous statement, many fans on social media clearly disagree with him, as McDavid should be able to stand on his own and compete without resorting to illegal moves.
Sure, the NHL need to do a much better job of marketing their top stars and attempting to put them on the same level as the names Perry mentioned, but this is hockey, why should these players be given separate rules simply for being good at the sport?
Ultimately, McDavid was deserving of the suspension and will now serve his three games, and hopefully when he comes back, he keeps battling hard, but does so within the legal means of the NHL.
