What are the chances that Mikko Rantanen is dealt once again for the 2nd time this year? If it happens, one team has reportedly emerged as the front runner to land his services.
Superstar forward Mikko Rantanen was already dealt once this year in what was nothing short of a stunning trade, going from the Colorado Avalanche to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Martin Necas and Jack Drury.
But if he won't commit to a contract extension before the March 7 Trade Deadline, Hurricanes management may feel they have no choice but to trade him to recoup valuable assets for him rather than see him walk on the open market this summer for nothing in return.
Per analyst Darren Dreger, the most likely landing spot for Rantanen if the Hurricanes decide to trade him sees him land back in the Western Conference on the west coast with the Los Angeles Kings.
Fellow analyst Elliotte Friedman recently revealed what he believes a "bold" strategy for the Hurricanes to follow with Rantanen.
Remember: if Rantanen is on the Carolina roster post-deadline, they are the only team that can sign him to an eight-year deal. If I had a good team, I'd always go for the Cup and let free agency fall where it may.
That could be the Hurricanes' path if there's no certainty by next Friday. The Stanley Cup is forever. I like bold, and that's bold.
Rantanen has 70 points (27G, 43A) in 59 games played split between the Avalanche and Hurricanes this year.
He's in the last year of his current contract that carries an AAV (average annual value) of $9.25 million, and has been rumoured to be seeking an AAV in upwards of $14 million on his next deal, similar to the major contract recently signed by Edmonton Oilers star Leon Draisaitl.
