Yesterday, the Chicago Blackhawks made a blockbuster trade, sending defenseman Seth Jones to the Florida Panthers in exchange for goaltender Spencer Knight and a 1st round draft pick.
The move is just the first of many Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson is likely to make in the coming days.
Of course, the team was also involved in the Mikko Rantanen trade as they sent Taylor Hall to the Hurricanes in the three-way deal, in addition to retaining salary on Rantanen.
The team still has plenty of players that could be on new clubs by this time next week including Ryan Donato, Pat Maroon, and Nick Foligno.
That being said, Jones was arguably the team's most valuable trade asset, so it is not surprising that he was moved well in advance of the deadline.
What is surprising is the fact that he only wanted to go to two specific teams.
According to Pat Boyle, the veteran blueliner was only willing to waive his trade protection in order to go to the Dallas Stars or the Florida Panthers.
This does line up with rumors that he wanted to go to a contender though.
Both the Stars and Panthers are among the favorites to win the Stanley Cup this season.
The Panthers are currently in 2nd place in the Atlantic Division, just one point behind the Toronto Maple Leafs while the Stars are 2nd in the Central, a whooping ten points back of the NHL-best Winnipeg Jets.
Meanwhile, the Blackhawks remain in 31st place, ahead of the San Jose Sharks and behind everyone else.
They will hope for some luck this summer as at this point the organization only has the draft lottery to look forward to.
