After two trades and across three different teams this season, star forward Mikko Rantanen made unexpected NHL history tonight during his debut with the Dallas Stars.
Mikko Rantanen has long been one of the biggest powerhouses in the NHL, recording 290 goals and 689 points in 633 career games.
Despite his value on the ice, he became a major trade piece in across the league this season, sending shockwaves among the fanbase.
After playing with the team for nearly a decade, the Colorado Avalanche traded Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes for
Martin Necas,
Jack Drury, and draft picks.
Rantanen's production went down substantially in Carolina, recording only 6 points in 13 games, far below his usual rate, and after struggling to feel at home,
would not agree to sign an extension.Just ahead of the trade deadline on Friday, he was traded away to the Dallas Stars after agreeing to sign an 8-year extension with an AAV of $12 million.
Despite the personal chaos of being juggled around the league, a second trade afforded Rantanen the opportunity to make NHL history.
By stepping on the ice against the Edmonton Oilers with the Dallas Stars, the 28-year-old forward was guaranteed to take the record for most points by a player to play across three teams during one season.
"The moment Rantanen steps on the ice for the Stars, he'll set a new NHL record for most points by a guy who played for three teams in one season. He's at 70, old record was Thomas Vanek with 68b points for the Sabres/Islanders/Habs in 2013-14."
Though the Dallas Stars lost Edmonton Oilers 4-5, Rantanen tallied two more points, putting him at 72 for the season so far.
With two hundred-point seasons and 19 more games in the regular season, Rantanens final count on this record has the potential to stand for a very long time.
