The Detroit Red Wings are off to a solid 1-1-0 start thus far in 2024/25, but after getting a big night from Cam Talbot in net, they are looking to move on from veteran backup Ville Husso. With veteran Jack Campbell in the NHLPA's Player Assistance Program, it's unclear what their plan is for the foreseeable future, but after Talbot stopped all 42 shots he saw against the Nashville Predators, he has been solidified as the teams No. 1.
On Sunday, they made the shock move of placing goaltender Ville Husso on waivers, with the 29-year old in the final year of a three-year deal that pays him $4.75 million annually, first reported by NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.
With contenders like Colorado, Edmonton and other teams looking to add depth to their goaltending group, there's a possibility that he could get claimed, but with his high price tag, it's more likely that he will clear through waivers and head back to the AHL. In one start this year, Husso allowed four goals on just 14 shots against the Pittsburgh Penguins, and after posting sub-.900 save percentages over the past two seasons, it's unclear where his future in the NHL lies.
In 40 games with the Blues back in 2021/22, Husso posted a 2.56 GAA and a .919 save percentage, but since being handed a huge contract by the Red Wings, he's failed to live up to expectations, and now he's likely going to play out the last year of that deal in the AHL. With the Red Wings looking to get back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they may look to ride Talbot throughout the year while adding a cheaper backup, but all we know for now is that a former starter in the NHL is hitting waivers, with his status tomorrow something to keep a very close eye on.
