Everyone is well aware that Edmonton Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl has one year remaining on his contract, and now a major update has surfaced.

It appears that after weeks of speculation regarding Draisaitl's future, progress has been made with him and the Oilers over a new contract. Despite the Oilers having had a controversial week and lots of distractions with the new Stan Bowman hiring, the team has still managed to have discussions and advance the situation with Draisaitl.

«It would not surprise me if Leon were to be signed to an extension shortly,» Stauffer reported on the day of Bowman's press conference.

Leon Draisaitl
is currently being paid $8.5 million annually, and experts believe he will command anywhere between 13.5 to $14.5 million annually on his next deal. Draisaitl's agent Jiri Poner wants a deal to happen, but gave Edmonton somewhat of an ultimatum.

«There's no rush yet, but either it happens quickly, by end of August, or it doesn't work out at all,» Poner said . «It will become clear whether Edmonton wants him or not».

Exact details of the upcoming contract extension are unknown, but everyone is well aware that Draisaitl will be receiving a massive pay raise. Draisaitl is also extra motivated to remain with the Oilers, as he knows how good the team is and how close they are to winning a Stanley Cup, so he will likely want to remain with them long-term.
