Three Young Centers Emerge As Trade Targets For The Montreal Canadiens
Three young and talented centers emerged as trade targets for the Montreal Canadiens ahead of the deadline.
Kent Hughes, the Habs' general manager, has never hidden his intentions to make trades that'll help the team in the long run. About to enter the end of their rebuild, the Canadiens showed that they could be a competitive team earlier this year, but something is still missing to make the team one of the best in the League.
A new report highlighted the fact that they need more depth at the center position, among other things.
The Canadiens have one of the deepest prospect pools in the entire NHL and have many assets available to trade to achieve their goals.
A source close to the team shared what's next for the organization in an interview with Marco D'Amico on RG.org, notably linking Trevor Zegras, Casey Mittelstadt, and Dylan Cozens to Montreal:
"They're going to want a significant established piece or a high-level asset they can flip for one."
«Montreal won't move their two 1st-round picks until they have more clarity on where things are going. Right now, Calgary is playing well above expectations, they're also only six points away from 10-to-last. If they make a move now and gift another club a top 15 pick, on top of other assets, it could be disastrous for them."
«The Canadiens are looking to add a young center to their core, especially as they try and figure out what to do with [Jake] Evans and, to a lesser degree, [Christian Dvorak].
Hughes and Gorton aren't looking to be your prototypical sellers, they'll likely be hybrid sellers, even if they fall out of the playoff race.
They'll look to ready themselves before the summer gets crazy. Guys like Zegras, Cozens, and Mittelstadt will be good bets to go and grab now as the Ducks, Avs, and Sabres look to make moves of their own." The Canadiens will be an interesting team to follow ahead of the trade deadline and in the next offseason.
