Frank Seravalli buries the Buffalo Sabres for their actions versus the Blue Jackets and New Jersey Devils
NHL insider Frank Seravalli called out the Buffalo Sabres today after the team put up a gutless performance against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
On Sunday night, the Buffalo Sabres were playing the New Jersey Devils when Tage Thompson took a high hit from Stefan Noesen.
The Sabres were immediately under fire for their response as no one stood up for the center, making it an embarrassing moment for the team.
Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff was particularly upset about how his team handled the situation, going so far as to call for a closed-doors team meeting the next day to address the issue.
Naturally, all eyes were on the team the next day when they faced off against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Right off the opening face-off of the game, Sabres defenseman Dennis Gilbert dropped the gloves in what was clearly a staged bout with Blue Jackets forward Mathieu Olivier.
The move was clearly intended to prove to the league that the Sabres are in fact, not a soft team and they will stand up for each other.
However, it seems to have backfired as Gilbert got crushed in the fight. As Frank Seravalli points out, this fight didn't really mean anything.
"You drop the gloves to start the game, which everyone thought was going to happen, and then you get slapped around by Mathieu Olivier. I mean, he absolutely crushed Dennis Gilbert in this fight. So you guys have a lack of response, then you have a staged response to show everyone. Oh, hey guys. No, no, we're actually tough. We do care for each other. That doesn't mean anything."
Seravalli correctly added that the Sabres showed their true colors the first time around.
No one stood up for Thompson when they needed to and they can't go back on that.
"You showed your true colors the first time around with the way that you handled the hit on Tage Thompson, to then show up and get dusted in a fight in the first five seconds of the game does not impress me. You get no points. I'm sorry, no. Doesn't work that way. If you came out and pummeled Matthieu Olivier, maybe, maybe, not this way."
Regardless, it seems that the Sabres will continue to be a joke of a team in the NHL as their record-breaking playoff drought continues.
