Today's game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins took an unexpected turn when goaltender Samuel Ersson left the game in the first period.

The Philadelphia Flyers have had a rough start to the 2024-25 NHL season. They've had the worst goaltending in the league, but the young Samuel Ersson has improved significantly recently.

Unfortunately, Ersson mysteriously left the first period of today's game against the Boston Bruins.

Things seemed especially concerning as a message from general manager Danny Brière came following his departure, rather than just a message from the coach or PR team:

Following the game, we received more information - Ersson suffered a lower body injury (per head coach John Tortorella):

"Lower body injury,"

When asked for more information, Tortorella confirmed that there was still significant mystery on what had transpired:

"Not sure, I haven't talked to the medical guys,»

Since joining the Philadelphia Flyers two years ago, Ersson has gone from a seldom-used backup (to then starting goalie Carter Hart), to the Flyers' starter. He is an important piece for the organization as they look to build upon their strong showing last season, where they nearly made the playoffs.

Having sent 2024 13th overall pick Jett Luchanko back to the Guelph Storm of the OHL, they still have rookie sensation Matvei Michkov on the roster, providing highlight reel plays. If that is enough to push for a playoff spot, however, is unknown.

Hopefully this injury is nothing serious, but the lack of clarity around it does not suggest good things. We will keep this story updated as more information emerges.
