The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that star forward Auston Matthews will not play against the Bruins due to an upper-body injury. He will be considered day-to-day and may return as early as Friday's game against the Red Wings. It was reported by NHL insider Chris Johnston.
This isn't the first time that Auston Matthews isn't 100% healthy, as early in the season he did miss some practices with an ailment. The Leafs are hoping this won't be too much of a long-term thing. Fans are definitely concerned as Matthews hasn't gotten off to his notoriously hot starts that they have been accustomed to in prior seasons, and one has to wonder if the early season injury and now this one are related to something deeper.
Matthews recorded an assist in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild while skating for 22:12 minutes.
At age 27, he has scored five goals and 11 points in 13 games thus far this season. In 2022-23, he led the NHL with 69 goals and had 107 points in 81 games.
The Maple Leafs sit at 6-5-2 on the season, which ranks them third in the Atlantic Division. They hope they will be able to play a hard game tonight despite missing their captain.
