After day one of free agency, the Toronto Maple Leafs blue line is looking more solid than it did in 2023/24, but now, they've got different problems as the team now sit $1.5 million above the salary cap. That's before they sure up their forward group, so something major has to give with Brad Treliving and this front office.
Now, one Maple Leafs writer has an intriguing suggestion for this team to free up enough cap space to add to the forward group, but it involves waiving recently re-signed goaltender Matt Murray, as well as placing defenseman Jani Hakanpaa on LTIR after recent reports about his knee.
The team also have the option of adding an asset to an expensive forward like Ryan Reaves, David Kampf or Calle Jarnkrok to move out their salary, so Treliving will have a lot to weigh up in the coming weeks. Ultimately though, there are definitely options there, and if the team believe Hakanpaa won't play a role in 2024/25, this may be the best one for them.
