The play instantly became controversial as debates began about the validity of the play and the calls that ensued.
Fans were split regarding the referee's decision. Many fans thought they got it wrong, especially because Vegas ended up getting a powerplay out of it, not the Leafs.
Many pointed to the fact that Whitecloud appeared to leave his feet during the hit, a classic way of getting a charging call.
Other fans pointed to the fact that Knies was hunched over and leaning forward, making contact with the head unavoidable for Whitecloud.
Knies did seem to have his head up during the play and seemed to see Whitecloud coming and yet he did nothing to protect himself.
Naturally, many fans were quick to tell Knies to keep his head up. It is a classic saying in hockey for a reason.
After the game, the play was of course discussed on Sportsnet, where the panel largely defended it.
Even though fans were split on the initial ruling, they are not buying this analysis.
Even Habs fans called out the panel for their analysis. It is quite rare to see Leafs fans and Habs fans agree on anything so perhaps they are right.
Other fans simply pointed to the fact that Whitecloud did leave his feet to make the play.
Several fans also called the panel one of the least likable in all of hockey. This seemed to be a popular take.
Hopefully, Knies will be okay. It will be interesting to see if the Department of Player Safety steps in for this one. Be sure to tune in later today for updates on both fronts.
