Steven Stamkos explains why he snubbed the Leafs during 2016 free agency
The Toronto Maple Leafs heavily pursued Steven Stamkos during the 2016 free agency period, and Stamkos has now revealed why he chose not to sign there.
Steven Stamkos has finally left the Tampa Bay Lightning for the first time in his career, but back in 2016, he chose not to do the same when it came to joining the Leafs. He has decided to come out and explain why he came to that decision.
«So when I re-signed in 2016, I wanted to finish what we started. And I had this vision of it in my head, right? Like the perfect ending to the story. Leading us through the playoffs in front of our city, lifting the Cup at Amalie, living out childhood dreams. I could see it.»
Stamkos didn't have the heart to leave Tampa Bay in 2016 seeing as he had still not won a Stanley Cup with them, however now that he has accomplished that feat not once, but twice, he was ready to move on.
Despite his age, Stamkos had a spectacular season, scoring 40 goals and 81 points. GM Barry Trotz really hopes he can replicate that magic in Nashville to help them get their first Cup in franchise history.
Unfortunately for Leafs fans, they will have to go through another four years, at minimum, without seeing Stamkos in their jersey. As they say, third time's the charm? Maybe in 2028!
