The Toronto Maple Leafs' forward depth is one of their biggest qualities as an organization, with the team having multiple players capable of playing in the NHL not on the ice every night.
That will only get better as the likes of Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan continue to develop, and that doesn't bode well for Alex Steeves, an undrafted center who has been in the organization since 2021.
Since that point, he's been a consistent force for the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, so much so that he has now become the Marlies' all-time point leader, tallying his 170th point on Monday as he passed Kris Newbury for the top spot in the organization.
With 81 goals in 200 games played, Steeves has proven time and time again that he's a fantastic player at the professional level, but with just 11 games for the Maple Leafs in that time, his future may not be in the NHL.
In baseball, that's known as being an AAAA player (too good for the highest minor league level, not good enough for the top league), and while there are plenty of players like that out there, none fit the bill in the NHL better than Steeves.
With his continued production, there's a chance he gets an opportunity at the NHL level this season, but if not, he may leave for greener pastures and a potential full-time role in the league.
For now, though, fans will continue to enjoy watching Steeves in the AHL as he pushes for his goal of a full-time spot in the NHL, with the 25-year-old still having plenty of time to make that dream come true.
