950-game NHL veteran defenseman has announced his retirement following a fantastic career

Kevin Shattenkirk is calling it quits, as the 950-game NHL defenseman has officially announced his retirement after having quite an illustrious career.

Longtime American defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk officially retired following 14 seasons in the NHL. The 35-year-old blueliner played last season with the Boston Bruins, putting up six goals and 24 points across 61 regular-season games.

He added an assist in six playoff games before the Bruins were defeated in the second round by the Florida Panthers.

Picked 14th overall by the Colorado Avalanche at the 2007 NHL Draft, Kevin Shattenkirk picked up 103 goals and 484 points in 952 career games. He played for the Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Ducks, and Bruins in the NHL.

A staple on the blue line during the Tampa Bay Lightning's 2020 Stanley Cup-winning campaign, Shattenkirk recorded three goals and 13 points in post-season action, averaging 19:30 of ice time per game across all playoff matchups.

A New Rochelle, N.Y., native, Shattenkirk also represented the United States internationally. Shattenkirk had three assists at the 2014 Olympics as Team USA placed fourth.

He played for Team USA at the 2011 World Championship, recording one goal and three points while finishing eighth.
