Alex Ovechkin has made no secrets about his love of the retro eagle jersey, and on his 39th birthday, the team gave him a surprise birthday gift.
This was the iconic jersey worn during Ovechkin's rookie year way back in 2005, and after the reveal, the team wasted no time in bringing up the nostalgia, posting a throwback photo and a comparison with The Great 8.
Recently, the team wore the design as a part of the NHL's reverse retro series, wearing the design with the modern-day red, white, and blue color scheme, and while that was one of the best looks of the series, it's hard to deny just how great the original is. It won't just be back for one or two nights however, as the team has officially revealed the schedule, revealing that it will be worn six times this season and will likely be around to stay.
This will be a hugely popular move in Washington, as the team has had fans begging for the return of this jersey for quite some time, and given the off-season that the team has had as they look for one more Stanley Cup with Ovi, these jerseys should absolutely fly off the shelf.
