Later this week, the Toronto Maple Leafs begin training camp for their 107th NHL season, and with Auston Matthews leading the charge as the team's new captain, expectations are through the roof.
GM Brad Treliving was not afraid to make big moves this summer to toughen the team up. Among those moves is bringing in gritty forward Steven Lorentz on a professional tryout. Lorentz, who grew up about an hour away in the Kitchener-Waterloo area, says he's excited to play for the Leafs.
On Monday, he joined TSN 1050's "First Up" to talk about how he has always wanted to wear blue and white. He's also hoping to bring a little of that Stanley Cup-winning experience from last year to Toronto as they chase the Cup in 2025.
He could fit in great in the Leafs' bottom six if Lorentz can lock down a deal. He's a tough, hard-nosed player who isn't afraid to get into the dirty areas and would be a solid option on the PK for head coach Craig Berube, too.
We'll see how this shakes out during training camp and preseason, but don't be surprised if Lorentz signs a one-year deal ahead of the October 9th opener against the rival Montreal Canadiens.
