For years now the Buffalo Sabres have been one of the worst teams in the National Hockey League. In 2015 when the Sabres drafted Jack Eichel with the second overall pick, many thought he would be the saving grace to finally bring the team back to being competitive, but 7 years later, Eichel is gone and the team is still near the bottom of the standings.
Tage Thompson joined the Buffalo Sabres at the starting of the 2018 season when he was traded from St. Louis Blues with Patrik Berglund, Vladimir Sobotka, round 1 pick in the 2019 draft (Ryan Johnson) and round 2 pick in the 2021 draft (Benjamin Roger) to Buffalo Sabres for Ryan O'Reilly.
Thompson had some ups and downs in the league but finally broke out this past season after finding some chemistry with Jeff Skinner and scored 38 goals and 68 points in 78 games.
The 24 year old still had one more year on a contract that paid $1,400,000, but the soon-to-be RFA just signed a massive 7 year deal to remain with the Buffalo Sabres.
