The Montreal Canadiens ended last season with a ton of hope and optimism, but an off season that brought about the losses of Shea Weber and Carey Price for the first half of the season have brought the franchise crashing down to earth.
Things got so bad that the Canadiens fired Marc Bergevin, who was in the final year of his contract and hired Jeff Gorton to run the team's management group.
The Canadiens have started this season 7-23-4 and are battling tooth and nail with the Arizona Coyotes for the basement of the league.
The transition from Marc Bergevin to Jeff Gorton is a significant one. Not just for the team, but for all the individual players.
Since Gorton's hiring we've already heard rumours of both Carey Price and
Brendan Gallagher's availability. Marc Bergevin as GM of the Canadiens was loyal and likely to a fault, but now the Canadiens have an opportunity to kick start their rebuild with a big move.
Carey Price is likely the biggest piece of the Canadiens rebuild and the ability to move his salary could free up the Habs to be competitive far sooner.
With Price seemingly nearing an in game return there are multiple sources watching closely. If Price can return and show he's still capable of playing post surgery then the Canadiens will have more than their fair share of interest.
The most likely candidate? The Edmonton Oilers
Edward Bochon from The Hockey Writers discussed Carey Price potentially joining the Edmonton Oilers. He claimed in the article that the Habs were looking to received a player such as
Kailer Yamamoto or Jesse Puljujarvi in return.
While Price has been linked often to the Oilers, Sportsnet's Rory Boylen actually believes it might be a different Habs goaltender, in
Jake Allen being the goalie the Oilers target.
With
Connor McDavid's rumoured ultimatum to Ken Holland it will be interesting to see what moves they make to try and keep their superstar happy.
