Devils announce multiple injuries with two players requiring surgery

In the first period of the January 2nd game against the Washington Capitals, New Jersey Devils' defenseman Dougie Hamilton took a puck to the face. Hamilton left the game and was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated.

At the time the play seemed harmless, but the Devils announced today that was not the case. Today the New Jersey Devils announced that Hamilton is scheduled to undergo surgery on a broken jaw Wednesday in New Jersey.

Hamilton was the Devils' prized free agent acquisition this off season when he signed a free agent contract. Hamilton signed an 8 year max contract with an annual average salary of $9,000,000. Hamilton was off to a very productive start to the season as he had 20 points in the first 30 games of the season and was on pace to to set new career bests in points.

The Devils also announced the following injuries/COVID related illnesses:

Team Captain Nico Hischier will not play tonight against the Bruins due to a lower-body injury.
Goaltender Jonathan Bernier underwent successful surgery on his right hip and he will miss the rest of this season.
Yegor Sharangovich and Pavel Zacha have both entered COVID-19 protocols and will be unable to play tonight against the Bruins
