Last night versus the Washington Capitals, they decided to go back to Lehner to start the game, and after the first period the coaching staff decided to pull Lehner, despite him stopping 12 of 13 shots. Backup goaltender Logan Thompson started the second period and held the crease for the remainder of the game.
NHL coaches are super weird about Lehner. https://t.co/1bzmHPTO57 Bonk's Mullet (@BonksMullet) April 21, 2022
Robin Lehner was playing well up until he was pulled, so this is definitely a case of the coach not trusting his goaltender in a must win game.
Here's Pete DeBoer's full answer on the decision to start Robin Lehner, and pull him for Logan Thompson to start the second period tied 1-1. pic.twitter.com/glGT5u91rj— Jesse Granger (@JesseGranger_) April 21, 2022
Lehner must have had a good laugh though that he did not have to face a 2-on-1 with Ovechkin, making Thompson let in his first shot of the period.
