In some amazing news today it was announced that The Atlanta Gladiators have signed forward Matthieu Gomercic to a standard ECHL contract. Gomeric is a survivor of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash that rocked the hockey world. Gomeric is the first Bronco to sign a pro contract since the crash.
In the crash Gomeric suffered severe injuries, but has been able to recover. In the crash he suffered a dislocated shoulder, a brain bleed and concussion and required stitches in his foot, but Gomercic was able to walk away from the crash. Gomeric credits his survival to his seat on the bus being at the back near the washroom, a seat no one enjoys, but likely saved his life.
After the crash Gomeric shared the following about what hockey meant to him after the accident.
"It's something I've always loved. Then this happened. Some days it's easier. Some days it's harder. But it helps me get through those bad days.»
Gomeric played the last 4 years at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology where the 6'3 forward finished his final season with 5 points in 9 games.
It's an amazing story to see how far this incredible young man has come as he plays every game representing his friends and coaches who lost their lives in that terrible day.
