Johnny Gaudreau was drafted 104th overall back in 2011, despite being one of the best players in the USHL. At the age of 28, NHL.com has Gaudreau listed at 5.09 and 165 pounds, so it's safe to say in his draft year, Johnny was roughly an inch or 2 shorter, and definitely a lot lighter.
A hilarious story was recently shared online that at Gaudreau's first NHL weigh in, he stuffed his jock strap with 5 hockey pucks so teams would think he bulked up!
''Gaudreau said at the time that all he was focusing on was 'getting as many extra pounds wherever I could.''
Even with these pucks being stored away, it's rumoured he still only weighed in at 134 pounds.
So unfortunately for Gaudreau he fell to 104th in the draft where the Calgary Flames snagged him, and oh boy, what a steal this has been for the Flames!
In his 8th full season with the team, he is currently 3rd in the Art Ross race with 108 points in 77 games. In his career with the Flames he has 602 points in 597 games, which ranks him 2nd in points in the entire 2011 draft, only behind Huberdeau by 7 points, who has played in 70 more NHL games.
Can we safely say that Gaudreau is one of the best draft steals in this era?
