On July 7th, The Chicago Blackhawks traded Alex Debrincat to the Ottawa Senators for round 1 pick in the 2022 draft (Kevin Korchinski), round 2 pick in the 2022 draft (Paul Ludwinski) and round 3 pick in the 2024 draft.
Debrincat on the Blackhawks scored 40+ goals on two occasions, and was a dynamic offensive threat with his linemates Patrick Kane and Dylan Strome.
When the Ottawa Senators traded for Debrincat, who was an upcoming RFA with a $9,000,000 qualifying offer, they were hoping that the young star was going to continue his 40+ goal pace, but that isn't what they've received from him this season.
While Debrincat hasn't been bad by any means, scoring 28 goals and 66 points, they were hoping that his 40+ goal season would improve to a near 50 goal season with another year of development.
With the Ottawa Senators continuing to improve year after year, they want to keep Debrincat, even if it means paying him the $9,000,000 per season. One former NHL player, who was a long-time Ottawa Senator does not think this is a good idea.
Marc Methot on social media called out this contract and Debrincat's lack of production and ''drive''.
A player looking for anything north of 9 million dollars should be driving the line he's playing on. Let's stop pretending it's a linemate issue.
