After a slow start to the 2024/25 campaign, the Colorado Avalanche are rolling right now, and with the team moving Mikko Rantanen to the 2C spot, they may have finally unlocked the full potential of this roster.
Unfortunately for Casey Mittelstadt, that has meant a major demotion to the fourth line at points in recent weeks. With the lack of production, the team is reportedly becoming frustrated.
According to reporter Adrian Dater, that frustration has made the 26-year-old a prime trade candidate out of Colorado, with the team looking to get a more established 2/3 C in return for him.
In 48 games this season, Mittelstadt has tallied 9 goals and 29 points, which isn't a bad result, but unfortunately, he also carries a -14 differential and has struggled to lift his game in recent times, and after giving up Bowen Byram to land him a season ago, it's clear they won't hesitate to move him either.
With players like Nazem Kadri, Dylan Cozen,s and Marco Rossi all potentially available to fill a middle-six center roll, there are plenty of options for Colorado, who once again believe they are a Stanley Cup contender after adding Mackenzie Blackwood in the net.
At just 26 years of age, there's still plenty of time for Mittelstadt to grow into a fantastic 2C in the NHL, and for a young team out there looking to offload a veteran, this could be the perfect play, and with Colorado chasing another Stanley Cup, this move here could be what makes or breaks their 2024/25 campaign.
