Brayden and Luke Schenn became the 10th set of brothers in NHL history to play 1,000 games each. Brayden achieved the milestone on Thursday night when his St. Louis Blues hosted the Washington Capitals.
Since the game was held in Washington, there was no on-ice ceremony, but the Capitals did acknowledge the achievement during an intermission.
The Schenns become part of a select group of brother fraternities, the others of which are the Niedermayers (Rob and Scott), Sedins (Daniel and Henrik), Staals (Eric, Jordan, and Marc), and Sutters (Brent and Ron).
They are also the first pair of brothers to have played in 1,000 games during the same season, as Luke achieved this on October 17th against the Edmonton Oilers.
Their paths to this milestone were quite different. Luke debuted with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2008-09 and was a full-time NHLer for a decade before bouncing between the AHL and NHL in 2018-19.
After winning back-to-back Stanley Cups with Tampa Bay, he reestablished himself as an everyday defenseman.
Brayden himself played just nine games in his first three seasons after being drafted by the Kings in 2009. A trade to Philadelphia for a steady job in 2011 eventually resulted in him winning a Stanley Cup with St. Louis in 2019.
Brayden has 12 goals and 34 points in 59 games this season, and Luke, who is more of a defensive player, has five points in 57 games. Both have been recent subjects of trade rumors, with rumors of a reunion.
They last occupied the ice together for three and a half seasons in Philadelphia from 2012-2016.
