According to Marc-Olivier Beaudoin, a writer with Dans Les Coulisses, the Montreal Canadiens have selected their new General Manager.

Marc-Olivier shared the following tweet this morning:

If this information is correct Hughes and the Canadiens are simply working out the details of Hughes contract with the team. There will also be a transition period involved for Hughes, who will need to transfer his current clients to other representation.

Hughes was a late addition to the Habs interview process, but if early rumours hold any truth Hughes was always one of the favourites for the position. Hughes appeared to initially be reluctant to leave his current position as a premier player agent, but if this information is true, that has clearly changed.

Hughes currently is the agent for Kris Letang, Patrice Bergeron, Darnell Nurse, Anthony Beauvillier and many others. Both Kris Letang and Patrice Bergeron are Quebec Natives, and unrestricted free agents, both of which are likely to draw interest from the Bleu, Blanc et Rouge this summer.

The addition of a veteran agent like Hughes to the Canadiens would provide them with a very unique negotiating perspective for upcoming recruitment. Paired with a hockey mind like Jeff Gorton this combination could be extremely beneficial for one of the most storied franchises in the league.
