Don Cherry Shares His Opinion About Jordan Binnington Before Team Canada's Do-Or-Die Game
The renowned Don Cherry shared his opinion about Jordan Binnington before Team Canada's do-or-die game against Team Finland.
After a disappointing 3-1 loss to the United States on Saturday night in Montreal, Team Canada must win this afternoon's game against Team Finland in Boston if they want to get a rematch against Team USA in the Finals.
They'll need to win in regulation time to clinch their ticket to the Finals, and there's a big debate going on at the moment about Canada's starting goalie.
Jordan Binnington allowed a lot of easy goals against Team Sweden and Team USA in his first two games of the tournament, which played a big role in Canada's current precarious situation.
Take a look at some of the controversial goals Binnington allowed in his first two games:
Even though Jon Cooper stated at the beginning of the tournament that he wouldn't do a goalie rotation, the question must be asked at this point.
Don Cherry shared his take on the situation: Team Canada should trust Jordan Binnington once more for the crucial game later today:
"Well, you got to come back with Bin, now. Yeah, I would come back with him."
It might not look like it, but Binnington seems to be the safest option for Canada.
But we can't ignore the fact that the management team screwed up by not selecting MacKenzie Blackwood or Logan Thompson for the tournament.
They would be better options than Binnington, Hill, and Montembeault, as highlighted by James Mirtle in a recent paper for The Athletic:
"Canada's best goalies this season, meanwhile, aren't on the team. In fact, Logan Thompson and Mackenzie Blackwood sit first and second in GSAx since the roster was determined.
With those two not an option, we're left picking from the three they do have available. Where I would give Hill the advantage is that he has played in a more similar environment to these games more recently than Binnington.
The assignment as Team Canada's goaltender is not to try and steal a game for a 25th-place NHL team like the St. Louis Blues. It's also a tough assignment for a goalie who hasn't played in the playoffs since 2022 and hasn't been out of the first round since winning the Stanley Cup six years ago." Whoever ends up between the pipes on Monday afternoon for Team Canada will need to be a difference-maker if he doesn't want to be an embarrassment for his nation.
