The Boston Bruins are not happy one bit with how things went down with their star defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who suffered an injury and brutal infection.

Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy is being watched closely at Massachusetts General Hospital after being treated for a serious AC joint injury and infection in his right shoulder, the club reported on Wednesday.

McAvoy, 27, exacerbated the injury while playing in Team USA's 4 Nations Face-Off against Finland on Feb. 13.

McAvoy played despite not being at 100% which made things worse

Team USA medical professionals, headed by physician Joel Boyd, treated the injury, and he played for 19:27 against Canada on Saturday, delivering the hard-hitting shot against Connor McDavid.

But after being sent back to Boston, things became worse for him, and the Bruins medical professionals evaluated him prior to admitting him into the hospital.

"After undergoing X-rays, MRIs, and bloodwork, he was diagnosed as having an infection in his right shoulder, as well as a significant injury to his AC joint. He underwent an irrigation and debridement procedure at Massachusetts General Hospital on February 18. He remains in the hospital, where he is being treated with IV antibiotics, and his condition is improving," the Bruins said in a statement.

The Bruins were said to be displeased with the Team USA treatment when McAvoy injured the AC joint, and the Bruins were not supposed to allow him to continue playing after the injury.

They also worry the injury will make the healing process complicated. McAvoy missed the Sweden game on Monday when his spot was taken by Jake Sanderson.

Joined on the injury replacement list is Quinn Hughes, who remained behind in Vancouver and did some skating with his Canucks team in non-contact equipment.

Reports by ESPN's Emily Kaplan say the player will not travel all the way to Boston unless he's playing for sure.
