NHL insiders speaking on the 32 Thoughts podcast have linked Ducks goaltender John Gibson to the Carolina Hurricanes in what could be a possible future trade.

According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the Carolina Hurricanes have had trade discussions with the Anaheim Ducks regarding goaltender John Gibson. NHL insiders on the 32 Thoughts podcast also confirmed this and elaborated even further on it.

This is before the Hurricanes reportedly also had interest in Mackenzie Blackwood, who's just now been traded from the San Jose Sharks to the Colorado Avalanche.

John Gibson has found his name prominent in trade rumors for several years now. After starting the year on the sidelines with an injury, he has returned to post a .903 save percentage in nine games thus far.

Once considered one of the elite goaltenders in the NHL, the 31-year-old spent four outstanding seasons from 2015-19 with a .922 save percentage and recorded two top-10 finishes in Vezina Trophy voting. Since then, he has slipped to a .900 save percentage since 2019.

He's signed through 2026-27 with a $6.4-million annual cap hit while 24-year-old Lukas Dostal, with his .921 save percentage in 16 appearances this season, seems ready to take the reins in Anaheim.

To this point, the goaltending for Carolina hasn't been very good with Pyotr Kochetkov sporting a .894 save percentage and Spencer Martin, even worse at .846.

The two combined have started 24 of the Hurricanes 28 games this season. Veteran Frederik Andersen, Gibson's former teammate with the Ducks, has been out since October and is still expected to be out some more time after having knee surgery in late November.
