It's been an eventful offseason in Beantown, with the biggest surprise being the trade of Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators, breaking up what had been an impenetrable goalie tandem for the Bruins. That seemed to seal Jeremy Swayman in as the team's long-term solution between the pipes, but if a report from Ryan Whitney of "Spittin Chiclets" this week is any indication, the team might not be ready to invest in that belief with their wallets.
Per Ryan Whitney, the offer from the Bruins to Jeremy Swayman is a four-year deal carrying an AAV of $6.2 million. Respectful of an offer, but it is pennies on the dollars handed out to the NHL's elite goaltenders, a group that reportedly Swayman views himself as being a part of.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports Swayman seeks a contract in line with Charlie McAvoy, who signed an eight-year deal worth $9.5 million AAV.
While Jeremy Swayman may not quite be worth that price today, at only 25 years old, he's just reaching his prime and has ample room to develop further. So, with negotiations still very far apart from each other, it is not clear how much either side is willing to give in. If no agreement is reached, the Bruins could be staring at the possibility of beginning the 2024-25 season with Joonas Korpisalo in net, a scenario very few in Boston are eager to face. Just ask the Ottawa Senators fans about it, they are still suffering from nightmares on the daily.
