Kevin Shattenkirk is hoping to keep his NHL career going at 35 years old. After spending last season with the Boston Bruins looking to add a second Stanley Cup to his resume Kevin Shattenkirk remains a free agent looking for a new home.
Today a report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has confirmed that Kevin Shattenkirk is only looking to sign with contending teams. In particular, Kevin Shattenkirk would love to play for the Edmonton Oilers according to Elliotte Friedman's sources.
With Kevin Shattenkirk hoping to head out West to the Edmonton Oilers the question then becomes whether or not it makes sense for the Oilers themselves.
At the age of 35 Kevin Shattenkirk brings plenty of experience but also some risk as a free-agent addition. The Edmonton Oilers do have a major need on defense heading into the 2024-25 season after trading away Cody Ceci and losing Philip Broberg to the St. Louis Blues after an offer sheet.
With the NHL season rapidly approaching the Edmonton Oilers need to take advantage of any defensive upgrades they can make. As of now, the Edmonton Oilers have just under a million dollars in salary cap space. If Kevin Shattenkirk really wants to play for the Oilers he would need to come in on a major discount.
