The Carolina Hurricanes were frustrated by Mikko Rantanen's time with the team, and now Rod Brind'Amour has buried him in a recent interview.
After weeks of speculation, the Carolina Hurricanes flipped Mikko Rantanen back to the Dallas Stars in exchange for
Logan Stankoven and several draft picks, ending a short but dramatic time in Carolina for the former Avalanche superstar.
Following his departure, there's been plenty of hard feelings on both sides, and in his latest interview, Head Coach Rod Brind'Amour buried Rantanen with a shocking revelation about how he arrived in Carolina.
«There's not been one guy that has left here because they didn't like it here. That was Mikko, and he did not like it. When he showed up, he said, there's four teams I'll go play for, but you're not one of them.»
According to Brind'Amour, Rantanen immediately told the Head Coach that there were four teams in the NHL he'd play for, with Carolina not being one of them, dispelling the speculation that the 'Canes only just found out what Rantanen's future intentions were.
While reports around the league were that he officially made up his mind in the past week, Brind'Amour makes it clear that it was likely not a hockey related reason that he let them know he didn't want to play there, stating that the front office likely should have known this before a deal got done.
«It's not because of the hockey, it's because I think his family, it wasn't for him. So good, and I appreciate that he let us know that. We probably should have known that before we made the deal.»
Ultimately, this was a dramatic saga that dragged on for weeks and likely didn't even need to take place in the first place, but now No. 96 has a new home for years to come and Carolina find themselves still chasing a Stanley Cup despite immense roster turnover as a result of the original deal.
